Walter Wenzel Pranke was born in 1925 in Czechoslovakian Sudetenland. He studied at the Dresden Art Academy. In 1945 he emigrated to the United States and filled several commissions for large murals in various government buildings in Texas and Oregon. He returned to Europe in 1947 and studied painting in Hanover and Dusseldorf. In 1955 he emigrated to Canada with his family and settled in Montreal. There, he continued to paint while also working first as a transport driver then as a stockbroker. Eventually he was able to paint full-time and his work was exhibited widely in Quebec, including many solo exhibitions. In 1981 Pranke moved to Ottawa, Ontario.
