Valentin Le Campion was born in Moscow, Russia, in 1903. While studying art in Moscow, Le Campion began focusing on printmaking, especially engraving and woodcuts. He left in 1927 to escape the Soviet upheavals, and went to Paris, home of his maternal grandmother. There, he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Valentin Le Campion died in the Le Plessis-Robinson commune in Paris, in 1952. Le Campion remains best known for his ex-libris prints, which he began producing in 1920, while still in Russia. He is known to have produced at least 144 ex-libris designs, and illustrated many books while in France. His works can be found in the National Library of France, the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, and the British Museum.
