Thornton Robyn Utz was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1914. From a young age, Utz began drawing and illustrating, and was receiving steady work while still in high school. He attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago, and soon was creating illustrations for the Saturday Evening Post and other major publications. Eventually he settled in New York, as his humorous portrayals of daily life in the post-war United States gained wide acclaim. As one of the most popular illustrators in the country, Utz created fifty covers for the Saturday Evening Post. In the late 1960s Utz moves to Sarasota, Florida, and turned his attention to portrait painting, completing works for President Jimmy Carter and Grace Kelly, among many others. His works can be found in many permanent collections, including the Smithsonian Institute (Washington). Thornton Utz died in 1999.
