Thoreau MacDonald was a Canadian illustrator, graphic and book designer, and artist. He was the son of Group of Seven artist J.E.H. MacDonald. He was self-taught, though he did work extensively with his father on commercial art. Thoreau MacDonald was colour blind and therefore worked a great deal in black and white. As an illustrator, MacDonald worked for Ryerson Press; Dartmouth College (Hanover, N.H.); Canadian Forum magazine for which he designed many covers; and on books in general, including for his private press, In 1933 he became a founding member of the Canadian Group of Painters. Woodchuck Press in Thornhill, Ont.. His work is found in the National Gallery of Canada(Ottawa), the Art Gallery of Ontario, and the McMichael Canadian Art Collection among many others.
