Steve Hanks was born in San Diego, California, in 1949. He attended commercial art courses at the Academy of Fine Arts in San Francisco, before graduating in 1960 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the California College of Arts and Crafts (Oakland). Hanks was quickly recognized as one of the top watercolour artists in America, and won numerous awards over the ensuing fifty years. Steve Hanks died in 2015 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at the age of 65.
