Stanhope A. Forbes and his wife Elizabeth Forbes (Elizabeth Adela Stanhope Forbes), represented in this auction, founded the Newlyn School of Painting in 1899. Stanhope Forbes arrived in Newlyn in 1884. Having been to France in 1881, he came into contact with the new plein air painters that greatly influenced his style. By 1885, with the exhibition of his A Fish Sale on a Cornish Beach at the Royal Academy, Forbes had established a national reputation. He is known today as the father of the Newlyn School and the most famous painter of Cornish life. The artist was seen painting with his easel in the streets of Cornwall on many occasions.
