Sonia Delaunay was born in Odessa, Russian in 1885, and studied in Russian and Germany before moving to Paris, France, where she co-founded the Orphism art movement which utilized geometric shapes and rich colours. She had many solo exhibitions of her work, including, in 1964, the first exhibition at the Louvre by a living female artist. In 1975 Delaunay was named an officer of the French Legion of Honour. Her work can be found in the permanent collections of the Musee National dâÀ™Art Moderne (Paris), Museum of Modern Art (New York), Tate Modern (London) and many others. Sonia Delaunay died in 1979 in Paris.
