Waddington's Auction House Biography and Notes
Born in Philadelphia, Russell T. Gordon originally studied mathematics, but switched to art, subsequently holding several teaching positions throughout the U.S. before moving to Montreal in 1973 to teach at Concordia. With its rich palette and diverse styles, "StringsÁ embodies Gordon's formal interest in juxtaposition and his desire to confound expectations of what art produced by a person of colour 'should' be. The work's impressionistic background contrasts with the hard-edge linear elements, yet harmony is achieved through colour and repetition of form. Through abstraction, Gordon transcended specific issues around race, conveying instead universal human experiences and his own ideas of what constitutes beauty in art.
