Cowley Abbott Auction House Biography and Notes
Russell Noganosh is an Algonquin/Ojibway artist, born on Henvey Inlet first nation in the year 1956. In 1957, at the age of 7 months old, he was illegally apprehended from his mother and placed in a foster home. At the age of 2, he was transferred to Sundridge, Ontario. He had taken up the art of soap stone carving in Toronto in 1977, as was suggested to him by Cecil Reeser. Noganosh left Ontario in 1979 and headed west where he attended Plains Indian Culture Survival School. He met Isaac Bignell, a Cree artist from The Pas, Manitoba, where Noganosh earned the sponge technique of painting from Isaac. For the next 34 years, the artist dedicated himself to this form of art, basically he is a self taught artist forming his own style of contemporary and traditional art themes. Noganosh works with acrylic paint on canvas, paper and birch bark. Russell has travelled throughout North America, selling his art work and participating in exhibitions and Art shows.
