Saskatchewan NAC Auction House Biography and Notes
Rodolphe Duguay is known for paintings, engravings and illustrations. He was born in Nicolet, Quebec in 1891. A painter, sketch artist, engraver and illustrator, he began taking courses in fine arts at the Monument Nationale in Montreal in 1911. From 1920 until 1927 he lived in Paris, travelled around Europe, studied at the Academie Julian and learned in 1925 the techniques of wood engraving. It was in this medium that Duguay achieved his most original expression, in illustrating the texts of his wife, Jeanne L'Archeveque-Duguay, as well as those of many other writers. The Duguay family home, built around 1835, and the painter's studio, built by his father based on the model of the artist's studio in Paris, were declared historic monuments in 1977. He was awarded the Order of Canada in 1973 and died later that year.
