Robert Dow Reid was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1933. His grandfather was a sea captain and Dow Reid went to sea on whaling vessels as a young man. He originally trained in marine engineering, before emigrating to Canada in 1958, settling in Kelowna, British Columbia in 1964. He is renowned for his public sculptures, including "Western Spirit", located in downtown Regina, which depicts four Canada geese in flight. Other public works can be found in Vancouver, Surrey, Kasugai (Japan) and Kelowna. His "Spirit of Sail" sculpture in Kelowna stands 38 feet tall. Dow Reid's smaller sculptures are often created in whale tooth ivory salvaged from whalers in the 1940s and 50s.
