Richard Hunt was born in 1951 in Alert Bay on the British Columbia coast, of Kwakiutl descent. He began drawing and carving at the age of twelve under the guidance of his father Henry Hunt, a renowned artist. Richard Hunt's work has included totem poles, masks and silkscreen prints, expressing Kwakiutl culture and traditions. His work can be found in many major public collections including British Columbia Provincial Museum (Victoria), Rideau Hall (Ottawa), Canadian Museum of Civilization (Gatineau), Museum of Natural History (New York) and the Art Gallery of Victoria. In 1994 he was elected to the Order of Canada, and in 2004 was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.
