Heffel Auction House Biography and Notes
After living in Calgary, Winnipeg and in Vancouver where he studied under the Group of Seven's Frederick Varley, Phillip Surrey settled in Montreal in the late 1930s, where he pursued his career as a painter and journalist. It was in Montreal that Surrey's style acquired its distinctive elements that expressed his vision of the dichotomic theme of urban social solitude. This was most frequently symbolized by using human figures passing through a cityscape, often an oneiric illuminated nightscape, as exemplified by this evocative painting. Throughout his oeuvre, Surrey proved to be a master of light and shadows and elevated his compositions to a level of beautiful complexity where different realities intertwine, the real and the dreamlike.
