Peter John Mitchell was born in 1962 in the hamlet of Fort McPherson, Northwest Territories, near Inuvik, of Gwich'in ancestry. He started to focus seriously on drawing and carving in 1982, and moved to Yellowknife in order to work alongside other artists. Mitchell now works mostly in carving, using soapstone, whale bone, ivory, and moose and caribou antler.
