Murray Turnbull was born in Sibley, Iowa in 1919. He received a BFA from the University of Nebraska (Lincoln, 1941) and an MFA from the University of Denver (1949). In 1954 he began teaching at the University of Hawaii (Honolulu). He taught at the University for over 25 years, and during this time founded the renowned East-West Centre, in Honolulu, "to strengthen relations and understanding among the peoples and nations of Asia, the Pacific and the United States." Known as a modernist artist, often using bright colours, Turnbull also created significant stained glass windows (University of Hawaii at Manoa) and murals, including at Wahiawa Intermediate School and the Kokua Market (Moiliili). After leaving the University of Hawaii in 1985, Turnbull continued creating art for decades from his studio in Manoa Valley (Honolulu). He died in Honolulu in 2014, at the age of 95.
