Mort Graham was born in Cumberland, on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, and grew up in Victoria. He was a self taught artist. In the 1950s, while working as an illustrator in Calgary, he began a decades-long interest in the Indigenous people of the Canadian plains, which culminated in the creation of the print portfolio A Native Heritage.
