Maurice Esteve was born in Culan, France in 1904. We was largely self-educated, but attended the studio Academy Colarossi, in Paris, and later worked as assistant to artist Robert Delaunay. His work became steadily more abstract, as he worked in painting, collage, textile design and murals. He became a central figure of Tachism, a European abstract art movement. The Esteve Museum opened in Bourges, France in 1987, housing a large collection of his work, which can also be found in the collections of National Gallery of Canada, British Museum, National Gallery of Art (Washington), and the Art Institute of Chicago. Maurice Esteve died in 2001 at the age of 97, in his hometown of Culan.
