Mary Alice Hadley was born into a family of clay tile makers. She exhibited an early interest in art and design and became a well-recognized painter. She began to blend her artistic talent with her knowledge of clay ware.In 1939 she made a set of dishes for her houseboat that was such a hit that the idea for a business was born. With the help of her husband the Hadley Pottery Co. was formed in 1940. By 1949, her business was expanding and she had over a dozen freehand decorators who assisted her to produce about 200 pieces daily. Her signature, M.A. Hadley was on each piece.
