Martin Panamick was born in the M'Chigeeng First Nation, on Manitoulin Island, Ontario, in 1956. He began art making at a very young age, and in 1966 was one of the original participants in the Manitou Arts Foundation summer school on Schreiber Island, Ontario. This program by Daphne Odjig and Carl Ray to encourage young people to consider a career in the visual arts. Panamick found immediate success as an artist, and before he was twenty years old had received commercial contracts and provided illustrations for children's books. Martin died in a car accident in 1977, at just twenty-one years of age.
