Waddington's Auction House Biography and Notes
Multidisciplinary artist Marcel Dzama creates fantastical, detail-rich worlds in film, installation, costume, and sculpture, as well as in drawing and painting–the media that first brought him to public attention in the 1990s. After two decades of exceptional success both critical and commercial, in 2010 Dzama was celebrated in his largest solo show to date at the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal. Of Many Turns featured cosmonauts, dancers, brown bears, Pinnochio figures and many other signature Dzama-esque motifs in quixotic, erotic, or violent encounters. His work has been exhibited at major institutions including New York's Museum of Modern Art, the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich and in the Whitney Biennale (2006). Dzama’s work was part of the Sobey Art Award Shortlist (2009) and has been selected for major public and private collections, including those of celebrities Spike Jonze and Steve Martin. Dzama was one of the founding members of the Royal Art Lodge and was active with the collective until it disbanded in 2008.
