Manuel Gonsalves was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1926. He studied at the Art College in Johannesburg before emigrating to Canada in 1955, settling in Calgary, Alberta. He studied at the Escola de Belas Artes in Lisbon, Portugal, before returning to Calgary to continue studies at the Alberta College of Art. At that time he also joined the Calgary Sketch Club and became the regular sketch partner of renowned landscape artists Roland Gissing. Eventually Gonsalves opened his own gallery, the Chinook Art Gallery, in Calgary, later named the Heritage Galleries. Mannie Gonsalves died in Calgary, Alberta, in 2012.
