BYDealers Auction House Biography and Notes

American-Canadian photographer Lynne Cohen is known for her rigorously composed images of empty interiors that are imbued with a sense of intrigue, unease, and occasionally humour. Cohen graduated with an MFA from Eastern Michigan University, and her early work in sculpture and printmaking was heavily influenced by Pop art. In the early 1970s, she turned to photography, favouring the use of a large-format camera, which gave her complete control of the image and produced incredibly sharp detail. In 1973, she settled in Ottawa and was soon noticed by the National Film Board of Canada, which supported her throughout her career. Her catalogue titled Occupied Territory (Aperture, 1987; reprinted in 2012) brings together black-and-white photographs of familiar functional spaces (restaurants, offices, beauty salons, reception halls) created during the first half of her career. The cover image features Model Living Room (c. 1976), which is also part of the prestigious Tate Modern collection in London, England. Cohen taught in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Ottawa from 1974 to 2005, the year she won the Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts. She died in 2014.
