Luigi Loir was born in 1845 in Goritz, Austria, where his parents were valet and housekeeper for the French royal family while they lived in exile in Austria. Loir studied at the school of Fine Arts of Parma (now in northern Italy) and he moved to Paris in 1864. He initially painted landscapes, but became renowned for his Paris city scenes which are particularly appreciated for the handling of light. Luigi Loir was made a chevalier of the Legion d'honneur in 1898. He died in Paris in 1916.
