Louise Abbéma was born in Etampes and began painting very early on, taking lessons from Charles Joshua Chaplin, Jean Jacques Henner and Emile-Auguste Carolus-Duran. She first received recognition with a portrait of the famous actress Sarah Bernhardt shown at the Paris Salon of 1876. Abbéma was an accomplished painter, sculptor, printmaker, designer and writer. She was a life-long friend and possibly lover of Sarah Bernhardt.
