Lone Gardner was born in Denmark and emigrated to Canada as a young child, settling in Banff, Alberta. She studied art and education at the University of Calgary and the University of Alberta (Edmonton). She also studied at the Alberta College of Art (Calgary) and turned to art making full-time after years of teaching and raising a family. She was a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and the Group Art Society of Calgary.
