Saskatchewan NAC Auction House Biography and Notes

Lloyd Kakepetum was born in 1958 and is a Keewaywin first nation band member born on the Sandy lake reserve in the far reaches of northern Ontario near the Manitoba border. Lloyd lived for a time in Couchiching at the east end of Sandy Lake, before he moved to Keewaywin Ontario where he now resides and paints. Lloyd was first introduced to painting by his late uncle Carl Ray in the year of 1977. Although Lloyd was greatly influenced by his uncle's work, he has over the years developed a style that is distinctly his own. He is a self-taught artist working primarily in acrylics. His work tfeatures delicate pieces filled with great detail. He is concerned with preserving the Indian way of life and culture. His imagery speaks of the traditional stories of the Ojibwa and his intention is to use art to encourage the telling of the tales in order to keep the Anishnabe spirit alive in today's world. Lloyd Kakepetum has exhibited his work in several group exhibitions in Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg and Thunder Bay and has had solo exhibitions in Toronto, Montreal and Winnipeg.
