Liu Kuo-Sung (Liu Guosong) was born in 1932 in Anhui Province, China. He moved to Taiwan in 1949 with the National Revolutionary Military Orphan School. He is recognized as one of the earliest and most important practitioners of modern Chinese painting, merging western techniques with Eastern traditions to create contemporary work. In 1957 Lui founded Taiwan's 'Wuyue Huahui (Fifth Moon Group)', a group of artists at the forefront of the modern Chinese art movement, meshing classical themes with modern abstraction techniques. His work is widely collected, including by the Art Institute of Chicago, Palace Museum (Beijing), the British Museum (London) and the Hong Kong Museum of Art.
