Saskatchewan NAC Auction House Biography and Notes
Leonor Fini was an Argentinian and Italian surrealist painter, designer, illustrator, and author, known for her depictions of powerful and erotic women. She decided to become an artist after recovering from an eye disease in her early teen. Although she had no formal art training, she was familiar with Renaissance styles and techniques from her early years in Italy. Her first major exhibition was in 1936 in New York at Julian Levy Gallery. Fini started taking on design projects in the 1930s as a source of extra income. Between 1944 and 1972, Fini's main work was involved in costume designs for films and stage productions. She designed costumes and decorations for theatre, ballet and opera. In the summer of 1986 there was a retrospective at the Musee du Luxembourg in Paris. It featured over 260 works in a variety of media and included watercolours and drawings, theatre/costume designs, paintings and masks. Many of Fini's paintings featured women in positions of power or in very sexualized contexts.
