Kay Ameche was born in 1904 and grew up near Chicago, Illinois. She was taken out of school at age 8 to help support her family, but after they relocated to California, Ameche completed high school at evening classes, then became in nurse working in Los Angeles hospitals. In her sixties Ameche began painting, using a naive style and mentored by the primitive artist Streeter Blair. By the 1980s her paintings were selling for thousands of dollars, and they have been purchased by such well known collectors as Nelson Rockefeller, Katharine Hepburn, Ronald Reagan and Elton John. Kay Ameche died in 2005.
