Saskatchewan NAC Auction House Biography and Notes
Born in Toronto in 1960, Karen Rieger studied at the University of Toronto for two years and then continued her studies in art at The Art Centre Central Technical School. She then attended the Ontario College of Art from 1984 to 1988. Colour is of prime importance in her work, evoking mood, sensuality and a sense of beauty. Relatively flat areas of colour are used to emphasize the formal qualities in each painting. There is no attempt to create the illusion of reality and the use of pattern unifies the foreground with the background. This approach to composition is further enhanced by avoiding the conventional practice of linear perspective.
