Karel Safar was born in Rychnov na Kneznou, Czech Republic, in 1938. As a young man he worked in Karlovy Vary as an architect, then from 1965 - 1971 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague in the studio of Karel Svolinsky. After his studies he travelled to Nepal and then to India, where for a time he was a professor at the University of Benares. He returned to the Czech Republic and remained prolific in painting and printmaking, becoming considered one of the most prominent figures in Czech graphics. Karel Safar died in 2016.
