Joseph Drapell was born in Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic) in 1940 and moved to Canada in 1966. After studying in the U.S. he eventually settled in Toronto in 1970 and eventually became recognized as one of the most important abstract painter in the generation that succeeded the 'Artists Eleven'. His greatest success came after adopting the method of applying paint with abroad spreading device attached to a movable support. In 1988 he served a period as guest artist at the Emma Lake Artist's Workshop.
