John McPherson Ross's family emigrated from Scotland To Canada. Ross grew up in Toronto where he studied painting, eventually establishing his studios on Adelaide Street and in the district known as Leslieville. He became known for his portraits and newspaper illustrations that accompanied his own articles. Although the exact location is unknown, this scene depicts life in what may have been a working class neighborhood in Toronto, with its shade trees, watchful policeman, utility pole, unpaved road and stuccoed building facades.
