John Kay was born in Dalkeith, Scotland, in 1742. He began making engravings around 1784 and met with immediate success. From that time on he created painted miniatures and portraits and caricature etchings, often depicting local celebrities. His work can be found in many important collections including the National Gallery of Scotland and the British Museum.
