John Herreilers was born in Alberta and studied in Carmel, California but was largely self-taught. He worked mainly in watercolour, though sometimes in acrylics, and his subject matter was often old farm buildings, prairie landscapes of Alberta and Saskatchewan, mountain scenes of the coast of British Columbia and Vancouver cityscapes.
