Saskatchewan NAC Auction House Biography and Notes
John F. Herring began his artistic career as a painter of inn signs and insignia on the side of coaches and was he eventually hired as a coach driver. He spent much of his free time painting horses and soon became sought-after by the gentry as a painter of hunters and racehorses. His reputation grew and in 1845 he was appointed Animal Painter to HRH the Duchess of Kent. This was followed by a similar commission by Queen Victoria, who remained a patron for the rest of his life. A label on the reverse of the painting indicates this position.
