John Allukpik was born in 1935. He learned to paint in 1953 while recovering from a bout with tuberculosis. He stopped painting for a time but resumed 20 years later, maintaining an output of around 7 paintings per month. In his later years he painted from memory to render scenes of traditional life in the north. It was from a wheelchair the he completed a monumental mural for the Kugluktuk Radio Society, measuring 8 feet by 35 feet. He died in Kugluktuk on April 4, 2015.
