Joanasie Petaloosie was born in the Cumberland Sound area of Nunavut in 1938. He lived in Iqaluit for many years and briefly in Cape Dorset. Upon returning to Iqaluit, Petaloosie focused carving, creating sensitive depictions of the Inuit people and of loons, polar bears and walrus. Joanasie Petaloosie died in 1995, in Cumberland Sound.
