Joan McAnsh was born in London, England in 1920. She emigrated to Canada in 1949 and settled in Regina, Saskatchewan. McAnsh studied at the Hornsey School of Art, in London, and took art classes at the University of Regina in the 1964-65 and 1970, and was a member of the Regina Federation of Artists. She taught private art classes in Regina in the 1970s and 80s, and was an instructor with the Saskatchewan Summer School of the Arts and the Extensions Department of the University of Regina.
