After graduating, he moved to Nova Scotia in 1971. At this time he was perfecting his haunting monotype print style, culminating in this first major solo exhibition at the Mount Saint Vincent University Gallery in 1977. In 1980 Shirley moved to Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, as an arts and crafts development officer, and remained in the north for thirty years. In 2000, Mount Saint Vincent University held a major retrospective of Jim Shirley's work.
