James Wedzin was born and raised in Behchoko (formerly Fort Rae) on Great Slave Lake, Northwest Territories, of the Tlicho First Nation. He was influenced by his grandmother who was a beadwork artist, and by his teens Wedzin was selling his painting in his community and beyond. Since 1999 Wedzin has been a full-time artist.
