Saskatchewan NAC Auction House Biography and Notes

James Lumbers was born in 1929 in Toronto, Ontario. He graduated from the Ontario College of Art, and for many years worked as an industrial and corporate designer. In the late 1960s he began to focus on painting, and was able to join an expedition to the Arctic which began as decades-long interest in the north and documentation of the peoples and wildlife of the far north. History and heritage are also central concerns for the artist, and his ongoing Moments in Time series of paintings juxtaposes modern locations with the history of these places. James Lumbers lives in Georgian Bay, Ontario.
