James Gillray was born in 1756 in London, England. As a young man he studied letter-engraving, then was admitted to the Royal Academy. During this time he supported himself by doing caricatures, and then he never stopped creating political and social satires and caricatures. Many of his works can be found at the National Portrait Gallery (London). James Gillray lived all his life in London, where he died in 1815.
