Heffel Auction House Biography and Notes

James Houston produced an unknown number of his own prints during his time in the North between 1957 and 1962. Most of his prints from this time served as educational tools for the Cape Dorset printmakers, demonstrating the different printing techniques he had learned in Japan. Niviaksiak is one of those works, notable for the dark lines and blue wash in the background. The prints that followed in the 1959 and 1960 Cape Dorset catalogues exhibit the same technique and style.
