Jaime Oates was born in Tossa de Mar, Spain, in 1912, of Spanish and English parentage. He studied at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Jorge, in Barcelona, and then attended the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London, England. Oates returned to Spain in 1948, but then fled the fascist regime of Francisco Franco and emigrated to Mexico. After a few years in Mexico City, in 1955 Oates moved the nearby city of Taxco to teach at the School of Fine Arts, and later became director. Jaime Oates remained in Taxco until his death in 2005.
