Born in 1949 in Uruguay, Ignacio Iturria’s work merges representation with surrealism in the depiction of domestic urban life. His childhood in Montevideo influences the muddy browns and earth tones which dominate his paintings. Painting on a variety of surfaces ranging from canvas to corrugated cardboard, Iturria generously builds up his paintings whether with a brush, spatula, or squeezed directly out of a tube. His depictions of urban and domestic scenes are inhabited by Lilliputian figures rendered with simplicity which seem to go on their business in an almost child’s play universe. Iturria represented his country in the 1995 Venice Biennale, and a survey of his work from the 1990s to present was shown at the Neuberger Museum in 2018.
