Hazel Pete was born in 1914, near Tacoma, Washington State. Her mother was a member of the vanished Kwalhioqua tribe. Hazel Pete graduated from Chemawa Indian High School in Salem, Oregon in 1932. Her artistic ability was recognized in high school, after which she studied at the Santa Fe Indian School under Dorothy Dunn. Pete then taught arts and crafts in Oregon, California and Nevada before returning to Washington to focus on basket weaving. Hazel Pete devoted her life to the preservation and restoration of Chehalis culture and traditions. She was named a "Master Artist" in 1994 by the Washington State Arts Commission Folk Arts Program, and was presented with the Governor's Heritage Award in 2001.
