Saskatchewan NAC Auction House Biography and Notes
SKNAC bio: Harold Lloyd Lyon was born in 1930, in Windsor, Ontario. He spent his youth working with his father in the northern Ontario woods, farming in summer and cutting logs and pulp wood in the winter. Upon turning his attention to art, Lyon attended the Meinzinger School of Art in Detroit, Michigan (1950-1951) and then the Ontario College of Art (Toronto). Lyon then worked in advertising and illustration in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he taught the basics of art in a TV series for CBC TV. In 1958 he moved to Calgary, Alberta to work as an advertising illustrator for the Hudson's Bay Company. In 1960 Lyon moved to Seattle, Washington to work as a freelance illustrator for department stores, and began painting more seriously in his spare time. In 1965 he moved to British Columbia and began painting full-time, and for twenty years he and his wife Katherine operated the Collectors Gallery in Kelowna. Eventually, Lyon moved to Scottsdale, Arizona, and, shortly before his death, to Birch Bay, Washington. Lyon said "Maybe all that work in the bush taught me something - I love expressing the story of nature. Something is always happening. I like to capture the relationship between animals and humans and the land in which they live." Harold Lloyd Lyon died in November 2020, in Birch Bay, Washington.
