Gy Szabo Bela was born in Alba Iulia, Romania in 1905. He studied at Budapest University of Technology and Economics, and from the early 1930 made his living by drawing and printmaking. In 1935 he published Book of the Poor, an album of 50 woodcuts. After further studies at Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts, Szabo travelled throughout Europe and published his second book, Wandering, a collection of woodcuts which sees to express the harmony of humankind and nature. He eventually published several more books, and contributed to many publications. Gy Szabo Bela died in Romania in 1985. His works can be found in many important print collections, including that of the National Gallery of Art (Washington) and the Art Museum of Cluj-Napoca (Romania).
