Graham Sutherland is a British artist known for his work in glass, fabrics, prints and portraits and book illustration. He entered Goldsmiths' School of Art in 1921, specializing in engraving and etching, before graduating in 1926. While still a student he established a reputation as an outstanding printmaker. Sutherland taught at a number of art colleges, notably at Chelsea School of Art and at Goldsmiths' College, where he had been a student. From 1940 to 1945 he served as an official war artist in Second World War drawing scenes of damage caused by the Blitz in London and industrial scenes on the British home front. His work can be found in collections around the world, including The National Portrait Gallery (London), Museum of Modern Art (New York), the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), the Art Institute of Chicago and the National Gallery (Washington, DC).
